Have you ever wondered what it takes to lead yourself?
Lead our own self is a lot harder than leading others as the responsibility and accountability is all on ourselves. Self-leadership is considered as the foundation of effective leadership, as it requires a high level of self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-motivation. It involves taking responsibility for one's own actions, developing a growth mindset, and continuously learning and improving.
Self-leadership is often seen as an important aspect of personal and professional development, as it enables individuals to effectively navigate challenges, make decisions, and achieve success in various areas of life. Elements of self leadership include:
being self-aware, which means having a deep understanding of yourself, including your strengths, weaknesses, values, and beliefs, which can lead to greater personal and professional growth and success. Self-awareness is not a fixed trait, but rather a skill that can be developed and improved through self-reflection, mindfulness, and seeking feedback from others. It involves taking an honest and objective look at yourself, acknowledging both your strengths and weaknesses, and recognizing how they influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
being self-motivated, which means having a strong internal drive and sense of purpose that propels you to take action towards your goals, even in the face of challenges or obstacles. It is an important characteristic of successful individuals in all areas of life. Being self-motivated means having the ability to take initiative, set goals, and persist in the face of obstacles, without the need for external rewards or punishments. It is important because it allows individuals to take control of their own lives, set and achieve goals, and pursue their passions and interests. It is a key characteristic of successful people in all walks of life, from business leaders and athletes to artists and scientists.
being self-directed and disciplined means having the ability to set your own goals, prioritize your tasks, and stay focused and organized without external direction or supervision. Self-directed individuals are able to take ownership of their own learning and development, and are proactive in seeking out new opportunities and experiences. As much as it is in intrinsic skill, with a bit of external help, being self directed and disciplied can be achieved.
keeping promises to yourself means setting personal goals and commitments, and following through on them with discipline and accountability. It involves treating yourself with the same level of respect and responsibility that you would give to others, and valuing your own time and priorities. When you make a promise to yourself, whether it's to exercise regularly, eat healthy, read more books, or pursue a new hobby, it's important to follow through on that promise with discipline and consistency. This means setting specific and measurable goals, creating a plan of action, and holding yourself accountable for your progress.
being accountable, which means to take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and the consequences. It is being answerable for your actions and accepting the outcomes of your choices, whether they are positive or negative. Self-accountability requires setting personal goals and standards, and then holding oneself accountable for meeting those standards. This can include developing a plan of action, tracking progress, and making adjustments as needed to ensure success.
being emotionally regulated, ie to manage and regulate one's own emotions in a healthy and constructive way. Practicing self-emotional regulation can have numerous benefits, including reduced stress, improved mental health and well-being, and better interpersonal relationships. It can also enhance cognitive functioning, leading to better decision-making, problem-solving, and creativity.
Self leadership is like juggling many balls at one time, and if you can lead yourself, you can lead others. It is the first step towards your leadership journey.
